WORLD EXPLORERS CLUB 12-Day Expedition to Greece
Featuring Athens and the Peloponnese May 16 – 27, 2023
Join the World Explorers Club on a 12-day expedition to Athens and the Peloponnese.
Day 1—16th May: Depart from your town to a Newark airport. Overnight flight from Newark to Athens Airport.
Day 2—17th May: Arrive in Athens early in the morning. Transfer to our hotel near the famous Plaka area. We take it easy for the rest of the day. Overnight Athens.
Day 3—18th May: After breakfast we go on a morning tour of the Archeology Museum with David Childress and then enjoy some of the sights of central Athens. Overnight Athens.
Day 4—19th May: We explore the Acropolis and other famous sites of Athens.
Day 5—20th May: After breakfast we visit Pnyx Hill, the cradle of democracy, with its megalithic wall built in a jigsaw fashion. We have lunch at the site and return to Athens.
Day 6—21st May: We check out of our hotel and then travel in a private minibus to Nafplio in the Peloponnese area of Greece, southwest of Athens. We will visit the famous Corinth Canal along the way. Overnight in Nafplio on the coast.
Day 7—22nd May: After breakfast we tour the amazing megalithic ruins at Mycenae and Tyrns, two megalithic sites very close to each other. At Mycenae we will se the Lion Gate and strange beehive building called the Treasury of Atreus with a 100-ton lintel. Overnight in Nafplio.
Day 8—23rd May: After breakfast we drive to the town of Kalamata, famous for its olives for lunch. We visit the ruins of Epidaurus, famous as a healing site of miraculous cures and for its ancient theatre. Built in the 4th century BC the theatre hosted plays to entertain the sick people coming for miracles. We explore the countryside and return to our hotel in Nafplio.
Day 9—24th May: After breakfast we drive to the town of Patras in the northern Peloponnese and check into our hotel.
Day 10—25th May: After breakfast we drive to famous Delphi in the mountains about two hours from Patros. Delphi was considered the center of the world to the ancient Greeks. Here at the site of the famous oracle with its megalithic blocks we have lunch and visit the ruins. We then drive back to Athens in the afternoon. Overnight in Athens.
Day 11—26th May: Free day for shopping and exploring Athens. Overnight in Athens.
Day 12—27th May: After breakfast we depart for the airport for our flights back to North America. We land in the late afternoon in Newark and fly on to other cities in the USA. End of trip.
Note: All admission fees, flights, and bus or train trips inside Greece are included. Breakfasts are included with some hotels. All other meals and drinks are excluded.
